Eric L. Mcintyre is a versatile artist who maintains an active career as a conductor, composer, instrumental performer and educator. He serves as music director of the Grinnell Symphony Orchestra and teaches composition, music history and theory at Grinnell College. Dr. Mcintyre has previously held conducting positions with the Hurley Symphony Orchestra, the Moores Opera Center, the contemporary music ensemble AURA and he continues to perform as a guest conductor, leading a broad range of ensembles from brass choirs to symphony orchestras and operas. His conducting mentors include Franz Krager, Peter Jacoby, John Shenaut, and John Canarina, and he has also studied with Michael Jinbo at the Pierre Monteux School and participated in the ASOL Donald Thulean Conducting workshop. Noted for his energetic and eclectic programming, Dr. Mcintyre provides fresh interpretations of familiar orchestral favorites, subtly balanced with lesser-known gems and music by living composers. He is widely recognized as an interpreter of new music and has led premiere performances, recordings and readings of dozens of new works by composers from across the US. His commitment to presenting an expanded palette of musical languages is matched by his enthusiasm for pre-concert discussions and program notes designed to enhance the listening experience for all audience members. As a composer, Dr. Mcintyre has had his work performed across the US as well as in Europe, South America and in Korea by an array of ensembles and members of several leading orchestras, including the Houston Symphony, Utah Symphony and the Concertgebouw Orchestra. He works in wide-ranging genres, such as orchestral music, chamber music, art song, jazz, music theatre and electronic music. His compositions have received awards and been performed at festivals of SCI, ASCAP, International Horn Society, World Saxophone Congress, College Music Society, the American Music Center, SEAMUS and KEAMS. His composition teachers have included Robert Nelson, David Ashley White, and Don Freund. Equally adept as a hornist, Dr. Mcintyre was a member of the Houston Ballet and Houston Grand Opera Orchestras and has performed with the Houston Symphony and Des Moines Symphony Orchestras. J-Ie has also toured throughout Eastern Europe and Italy as a chamber musician with the European Mozart Foundation. Among his primary horn teachers are legendary Cleveland Orchestra principal hornist, Myron Bloom, and Volker Altrnann of the Vienna Philharmonic. Dr. McIntyre is an alumnus of Indiana University, where he received B.M. and M.M. degrees in music performance and was awarded the prestigious Performer's Certificate. He holds a D.M.A. in music composition from the University of Houston Moores School of Music. In addition to his musical activities, Dr. Mcintyre enjoys rural life in Iowa and resides on a little farm outside Grinnell with his wife Guinevere, their son Miles and a small family of farm animals.
